Bahrain’s Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) has received two bids for the development of the 100 MW Bilaj Al Jazayer Independent Power Plant (BAJ Solar IPP), marking another step in the kingdom’s renewable energy expansion plans.
According to the bid opening results, Yellow Door Energy Projects Co., the Bahrain subsidiary of UAE-based Yellow Door Energy submitted the lowest bid at BHD 11.398, while Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power submitted a bid of BHD 15.440.
Industry sources indicate that the bids likely correspond to electricity tariffs of approximately 11.398 fils/kWh (around 3.02 US cents/kWh) for Yellow Door Energy and 15.440 fils/kWh (around 4.10 US cents/kWh) for ACWA Power.
The BAJ Solar IPP is being procured under a Build-Own-Operate (BOO) model and will supply power to EWA under a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). The Request for Proposal (RFP) for the project was issued on 16 October 2025.
The project forms part of Bahrain’s broader strategy to diversify its energy mix and increase the share of renewable energy in electricity generation. The kingdom has set a target of achieving 20 percent renewable energy penetration by 2035.
Once operational, the BAJ Solar IPP is expected to contribute to reducing carbon emissions, enhancing energy security, and supporting Bahrain’s long-term sustainability goals.
