Avaada Group plans to establish a 1,500-tonnes-per-day green ammonia facility at Gopalpur in Odisha, as the company looks to expand its presence in the State's emerging green energy and industrial ecosystem.

Vineet Mittal, Chairman, Avaada Group, highlighted the proposed project while addressing the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit & Expo 2026 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. He said that Odisha could emerge as a major green industrial hub by integrating renewable energy, pumped storage hydropower, green hydrogen production and port infrastructure.

Mittal called for a shift in Odisha's industrial development strategy from supplying mineral resources to manufacturing high-value, low-carbon products for domestic and international markets. He said that the State's iron ore, coal and bauxite resources, established industrial base and coastal infrastructure could support the development of green industrial products.

He emphasised that reliable renewable electricity would be essential for energy-intensive industries such as steel and aluminium manufacturing. According to him, solar and wind generation need to be complemented by battery energy storage systems (BESS) and pumped storage hydropower to ensure round-the-clock power availability.

Referring to Odisha's Pumped Storage Policy 2025, Mittal called for faster identification and development of bankable projects, supported by transmission connectivity, transparent approvals and suitable long-term commercial arrangements. He also highlighted the potential of artificial intelligence in renewable generation forecasting, electricity demand prediction and energy dispatch.

Mittal said that the integration of renewable energy and storage could improve the competitiveness of Odisha's industrial sector, particularly as international markets increasingly consider the carbon intensity of industrial products. He cited the European Union's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) as an emerging requirement that could create opportunities for low-carbon steel produced in the State.

He identified Gopalpur, Paradip and Dhamra ports as strategic infrastructure for developing an integrated green-molecules ecosystem. The proposed green ammonia facility at Gopalpur, he said, reflects Avaada's confidence in Odisha's industrial potential.

Mittal added that green hydrogen, green ammonia and green methanol could support the next generation of industrial manufacturing, provided production costs, energy reliability, infrastructure readiness and long-term customer commitments are addressed.

He outlined three priorities for accelerating clean-energy investments in Odisha. These include creating an investment-ready project bank with assessed land availability, environmental requirements, infrastructure needs and transmission connectivity; developing integrated green industrial corridors linking renewable energy, storage, hydrogen production, industrial clusters and ports; and introducing a coordinated single-window clearance mechanism with transparent approvals and time-bound commissioning milestones.

He also called for greater industry participation in developing local skills, employment and enterprise opportunities, particularly in rural and tribal regions. He said that the success of the energy transition should be assessed not only through installed capacity and investment commitments but also through industrial development, livelihood creation and community participation.

Outlining his vision for Odisha by 2035, Mittal said that the State could become a global supplier of low-carbon steel, aluminium, green ammonia, green methanol and other green industrial products by leveraging its mineral resources, industrial base, renewable energy potential and port infrastructure.
