Nuclear energy solutions provider Rosatom’s Atommash, AEM-Technologies - JSC Branch in Volgodonsk, has completed welding of the steam generator heads for unit 5 of the Kudankulam NPP, a nuclear power plant in Tamil Nadu, India.

Kudankulam nuclear power plant has been equipped with VVER-1000 reactors.

In June 2017, the Engineering Division of Rosatom State Corporation and Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) signed the agreement for the third stage construction (Units 5 and 6) of Kudankulam NPP.

The company, which is a specialist in the field of nuclear energy, said that the preliminary, support components and 11,000 heat-exchange coils were completed inside the steam generator. Automatic welding of the heads has been performed with heating at a temperature of 120 to 250 degrees for seven days. The welding of the two welds required 660 kg of wire and 935 kg of flux. Further, specialists would perform local heat treatment of welds and a full range of technical inspections, including hydraulic tests and eddy-current tests of heat-exchange tubes.

The steam generator is a heat exchange equipment, part of the reactor facility and belongs to the first safety class items. The equipment is about 14 meters long, over 4 meters in diameter, and weighs 350 tons. The equipment of one NPP unit includes four steam generators.

Since February 2016, the first power unit of the Kudankulam NPP has been steadily operating at the design power level of 1,000 MW. The second power unit was connected to India's national power grid on August 29, 2016. The Master Framework Agreement with Rosatom on the construction of the third and fourth units was signed in the spring of 2014.

Joint-Stock Company AEM-Technologies was founded in 2007 in the structure of JSC Atomenergomash, the engineering division of the State Corporation Rosatom, and is currently one of the leading Russian companies in the field of power engineering, a member of the Russian Engineering Union. The Company has an engineering center staffed with experienced designers and process engineers, as well as two production sites: Petrozavodskmash, AEM-Technologies, JSC Branch in Petrozavodsk and Atommash, AEM-Technologies, JSC Branch in Volgodonsk.

Rosatom possesses a wide range of assets, including assets in design, construction and operation of nuclear power stations, uranium mining, conversion and enrichment, supply of nuclear fuel, decommissioning, spent fuel storage and transportation and safe nuclear waste disposal.

The company is also engaged in the production of equipment and isotope products for the needs of nuclear medicine, scientific research, and materials science, the production of digital and of various nuclear and non-nuclear innovative products. Its strategy is to develop low-carbon power generation projects, including in the wind generation field.
