Ashok Leyland Breaks Ground on New Green Mobility Plant in Uttar Pradesh

The primary focus of the facility will be on producing electric buses, with the flexibility to manufacture other vehicles powered by existing and emerging alternate fuels.

Ashok Leyland, a commercial vehicle manufacturer in India, breaks ground on a new integrated commercial vehicle plant focused on green mobility in Uttar Pradesh.

The ground-breaking ceremony, held at the new factory site on Kanpur Road, Lucknow, was honored by the presence of the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath, who unveiled the Foundation Plaque and laid down the Foundation stone.

The ceremony was attended by several guests including Suresh Khanna, Minister of Finance and Parliamentary Affairs, and Nand Gopal Gupta, Minister for Industrial Development, Export Promotion, NRI, and Investment Promotion, Government of Uttar Pradesh, along with senior members of the Hinduja family, Ashok Leyland’s dealers, customers, suppliers, and other dignitaries.

Spanning across 70 acres, the greenfield manufacturing facility will incorporate the latest in manufacturing technology, making it Ashok Leyland’s most modern and environmentally friendly factory worldwide. The primary focus will be on producing electric buses, with the flexibility to manufacture other vehicles powered by existing and emerging alternate fuels.

Dheeraj Hinduja, Executive Chairman of Ashok Leyland, expressed his optimism, stating, “The Foundation Stone laying ceremony marks the beginning of a new chapter for Ashok Leyland in Uttar Pradesh. Once operational, the facility will have a positive impact on our common goals of generating employment opportunities and advancing sustainable mobility in India. We remain committed to driving innovation and setting new benchmarks in the field of green mobility. With this new plant, we are preparing ourselves for the future and take one step further to achieve our Net Zero emissions goals.”

Shenu Agarwal, MD and CEO of Ashok Leyland, emphasized the significance of the facility, stating, “This facility will not only address the rising demand for electric vehicles but also play a vital role in the holistic development of the region. Our focus on electric trucks and buses resonates with the evolving landscape of sustainable transportation and pushes us one step further to build a green mobility future.”

Initially, the plant will have the capacity to produce 2500 vehicles per year, with plans to expand to 5000 vehicles annually over the next decade to meet the growing demand for electric and other types of vehicles. This new facility represents Ashok Leyland's seventh vehicle plant in the country.
