Arevon Energy, a player in renewable energy development, has sealed a 15-year energy storage service deal with San Diego Community Power (SDCP), California's second-largest community choice aggregator.

The agreement pertains to the entire capacity of the Avocet Energy Storage Project, a 200 MW/800 MWh stand-alone battery energy storage system (BESS) situated in Carson, California. Expected to go operational in Q2 2026, this venture marks Arevon's second collaboration with SDCP, following the Vikings Solar-plus-Storage Project.

The Avocet Energy Storage Project will leverage Tesla's Megapack technology, storing energy during non-peak hours for discharge during periods of peak demand, thereby strengthening grid stability and mitigating blackout risks.

Featuring a four-hour duration electricity supply, the Avocet facility will seamlessly integrate with the region's renewable energy sources, enhancing overall electricity reliability.

Moreover, the project is anticipated to generate approximately 75 union construction jobs, fostering economic growth while prioritizing American-manufactured battery technology. Over its lifespan, the Avocet Energy Storage Project is slated to contribute more than USD 35 million in property tax payments, strengthening local government activities and supporting the local school district.

Tommy Greer, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer at Arevon, emphasized the environmental and social benefits of energy storage systems stating, “Energy storage systems such as our Avocet Energy Storage facility reduce air pollution and contribute to grid reliability. As with all of our projects, we are invested in the local area and are committed to both the economic and social well-being of the community.”

At a capacity of 200 MW/800 MWh, the Avocet Energy Storage facility stands as the largest stand-alone storage initiative within SDCP's portfolio. The energy output from the project is projected to suffice for powering approximately 45,000 households for up to four hours daily, further solidifying its significance in the region's energy landscape.

Karin Burns, Chief Executive Officer of SDCP, echoed the sentiment of clean, reliable, and affordable energy provision. “The Avocet project will be a critical component to ensure that, not only are we adding energy storage to shift renewable generation to demand hours, but we are creating quality construction jobs that support the energy transition in our communities,” said Burns.
