In a decisive push to strengthen Andhra Pradesh’s clean energy ambitions, the State Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, approved a series of major renewable energy projects at its recently held 26th meeting. The Cabinet also took a tough stand by cancelling a long-delayed pumped storage project (PSP) in Nandyal district.
Information and Public Relations Minister Kolusu Parthasarathy announced that three projects from the Adani Group were among those cleared. Adani Renewable Energy Fifty One Ltd. received approval to expand its Gandikota PSP in YSR Kadapa district from 1,000 MW to 1,800 MW. Additionally, Adani Hydro Energy Four Ltd. was permitted to scale up the Peddakota PSP in Alluri Sitarama Raju district from 1,000 MW to 1,800 MW. A third approval went to Adani Hydro Energy One Ltd. to increase the Raiwada PSP capacity from 600 MW to 900 MW in Vizianagaram and Anakapalli districts.
“These approvals mark a significant upgrade in the State’s renewable energy storage capabilities, positioning Andhra Pradesh as a national leader in pumped hydro energy,” the Minister said.
The Cabinet also gave the green light to Berry Alloys Ltd. to set up an 83 MW wind-solar hybrid power project at Maddelacheruvu in Sri Sathya Sai district, further supporting the State’s push for integrated clean energy solutions.
In addition, Chinta Green Energy Pvt. Ltd. secured approval for a 360 MW pumped storage project at Koppolu in Kondapuram mandal, YSR Kadapa district. This project is expected to play a critical role in grid stability and energy balancing.
In a significant corrective move, the Cabinet cancelled the 800 MW Avuku PSP in Nandyal district, previously awarded to Yarro Infra Pvt. Ltd. (formerly Aurobindo Realty & Infrastructure Pvt. Ltd.). The cancellation followed recommendations from NREDCAP’s Vice-Chairman and Managing Director, citing prolonged delays in the submission of the Detailed Project Report (DPR), pending payments, and lack of progress on-site.
“The cancellation sends a clear message that the State is committed to accountability and will not tolerate delays in strategic renewable energy projects,” the Minister emphasised.
