The Angolan Ministry of Finance has procured USD 1.40 billion in fiscal arranged by British bank Standard Chartered Plc to develop photovoltaic (PV) electricity distribution infrastructure for several rural regions throughout the nation.
The finances will be utilised to establish 48 hybrid photovoltaic generation systems with energy storage that will cater as ‘mini-grids’ and work individually to facilitate renewable electricity for communities not linked to the national grid.
The proposed solar amenities are likely to cater to around 203,000 households in 60 communities.
The financing will also assist the augmentation of the national grid in Malanje, northern Angola, and construct new lines and networks linking other municipalities.
The project is being made by the Ministry of Energy and Water. The contractor is Portugal-based MCA Group which is in control of the construction and project management.
A huge part of the financing, about EUR 1.2 billion, is aided by German Export Credit Agency Euler Hermes, whereas the rest is a commercial loan.
