Amazon Begins Yamuna Water Replenishment Drive, Strengthens Sustainability Goals

This initiative complements Amazon’s broader environmental strategy, which includes advancing energy efficiency and accelerating the shift toward renewable energy across its operations in India.

Amazon is funding its first-ever water replenishment project in the Yamuna River watershed, upstream from New Delhi, in a major step towards addressing water scarcity and over-extraction of groundwater in one of India’s most water-stressed regions.

This initiative adds to Amazon's expanding portfolio of sustainability projects in India, which includes lake restoration and community-based water solutions that have already benefited over 1 million people since 2020.

Once completed, the project is expected to replenish over 400 million litres of water annually, contributing significantly to Amazon’s 2024 goal of returning more water to communities in India than it uses in its direct operations by 2027. This water initiative complements Amazon’s broader environmental strategy, which includes advancing energy efficiency and accelerating the shift toward renewable energy across its operations in India.

New Delhi continues to face critical water management challenges, with shortages affecting both daily life and business operations. Amazon’s project in New Delhi, centred around a groundwater recharge programme, was formally announced during Amazon’s inaugural Water Dialogues, a platform convening experts to deliberate on solutions to India’s worsening water crisis.

The thought leadership event brought together notable figures in the water sector, including Ramveer Tanwar (The Pondman of India), Sheeba Sen (Co-founder, Hasten Regeneration), and Manoj Singh (Associate Director - Climate, Agriculture & Food Systems, The Nature Conservancy). The event also featured a keynote address by Sasmit Patra, Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha).

The New Delhi project, implemented by Hasten Regeneration, a social enterprise specialising in ecosystem restoration, will combine the rehabilitation of check dams and ponds with the construction of water-saving structures such as percolation pits and recharge shafts. In addition, planting vegetation around these structures will help reduce erosion, enhance soil moisture, and improve surrounding landscapes. Sites will be strategically selected within the Yamuna River basin to maximise water security benefits for the capital region.

“Inaugural Water Dialogues 2025 in Delhi marks a meaningful step toward collaboration on India’s water challenges,” said MP Sasmit Patra. “Amazon’s investment in this water replenishment project, expected to return over 400 million litres annually, is a commendable example of corporate leadership in sustainable development,” he added.

“Our country faces critical water challenges, especially in New Delhi where groundwater levels are falling alarmingly,” said Abhinav Singh, Vice President, Operations, Amazon India & Australia. “Through our partnership with Hasten Regeneration, we aim to restore the Yamuna basin using a watershed-level approach that not only recharges aquifers and captures monsoon runoff, but also strengthens community stewardship of natural resources,” added Singh.

To implement this initiative, Hasten Regeneration will work alongside Arpan Seva Sansthan, recipient of the National Water Award 2023, and Clear Water Dynamics, a Bengaluru-based water engineering consultancy.

This project reinforces Amazon’s multi-pronged sustainability strategy in India, which goes beyond water. The company continues to scale its renewable energy footprint, install energy-efficient systems across fulfilment centres, and reduce resource consumption through smart infrastructure and circular practices. These efforts are aligned with Amazon’s global Climate Pledge to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.

In India, Amazon’s integrated focus on water replenishment, energy efficiency, and climate resilience positions it as a proactive contributor to solving pressing environmental challenges while creating long-term, positive impact for local communities.
