AM Green and V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOCPA) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to jointly develop a green ammonia production and bunkering hub at VOC Port in Tuticorin, marking a key step in India's efforts to build a green hydrogen ecosystem and decarbonise maritime transport.

The agreement combines AM Green's ambitions for green ammonia production with VOC Port's existing ammonia-handling infrastructure and its status as a designated National Green Hydrogen Hub.

Under the partnership, the companies aim to develop up to 200 KTPA of green ammonia marine bunkering capacity at the port by 2029-30, involving an estimated investment of INR 2,000 crore.

The project could be expanded to 500 KTPA by 2035, requiring total investments of around INR 5,000 crore, subject to market demand and wider adoption of low-carbon marine fuels.

The partners will also explore pilot bunkering operations and develop supporting infrastructure in line with international standards for green ammonia bunkering.

The MoU further supports AM Green's plans to establish a 1 MTPA green ammonia production facility near the port, with an estimated investment of INR 15,000 crore. The company said it has already completed a significant portion of the land acquisition required for the project.

The development is also expected to unlock around INR 35,000 crore of investment in renewable power generation to supply the green hydrogen and ammonia complex.

"Tuticorin is a natural gateway for India’s green ammonia bunkering future. VOC Port’s existing ammonia infrastructure, its Green Hydrogen Hub designation, and its connectivity to global shipping lanes make this partnership a critical building block in AM Green’s pan-India commercialisation strategy. Together, we aim to position India and VOC Port at the centre of the global green maritime fuel supply chain," said Gautam Reddy Kumbam, CEO, AM Green.

Susanta Kumar Nath, Chairman of V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority, said the partnership would strengthen the port's position in the emerging green fuels market.

"VOC Port has long been a cornerstone of India’s ammonia supply chain, and this partnership with AM Green is a natural next step in our journey towards becoming a world-class green fuels hub. We are committed to providing the infrastructure, facilitation, and institutional support needed to make Tuticorin a leading destination for green ammonia bunkering and export, and we look forward to working with AM Green to realise this shared vision," Nath said.
