The Akshay Urja Bhavan in New Delhi has attained a prestigious milestone by earning the LEED 4.1 Platinum Green Building certification. This certification was formally presented by the LEED team to MNRE Secretary Bhupinder Singh Bhalla, highlighting the building's exceptional performance in sustainability and energy efficiency. Completed in the year 2022, the Akshay Urja Bhavan, serving as the headquarters for the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), stands out as a model for green building practices in India.
Built by Edifice Consultants, the building integrates advanced energy-saving technologies and a net-positive energy approach, as it generates more energy than it consumes annually. Equipped with solar panels and environmentally friendly materials, it also features innovative architectural designs that focus on passive cooling and natural ventilation, significantly reducing the need for mechanical systems. This achievement highlights the potential for sustainable design to minimise environmental impact and enhance resource efficiency.
LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a global green building certification system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council. It evaluates buildings based on sustainability, energy efficiency, water conservation, and indoor environmental quality. LEED awards Certified, Silver, Gold, or Platinum levels depending on the points earned, guiding buildings towards higher environmental performance and sustainability.
