The All India DISCOMs Association (AIDA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Virginia-based Energy Systems Integration Group (ESIG) to bring global expertise and technical collaboration to India’s power distribution sector.

The partnership aims to support Indian DISCOMs in addressing emerging challenges linked to renewable energy integration, grid flexibility, system planning, and distribution network modernisation.

The collaboration is focused on enabling international knowledge exchange and implementation-driven engagement to strengthen the operational and planning capabilities of Indian utilities. Under the agreement, AIDA and ESIG will work together to leverage global best practices, facilitate peer-to-peer learning between Indian and international power sector experts, and organise technical workshops, convenings, and expert sessions for utilities and stakeholders.

As part of the structured implementation plan under the MoU, the partnership will address key areas including distribution system data collection and analysis, distribution network planning and operations, distribution system flexibility, and bulk system resource and load planning.

The initiative will focus on improving the collection, governance, and use of data from smart meters and other digital sources to enhance visibility and decision-making for utilities. It will also support DISCOMs in adopting advanced operational and planning practices to improve system observability, reliability, and overall network performance.

In the area of distribution system flexibility, the collaboration will explore demand flexibility, distributed energy resource (DER) management, flexible grid connections, and other approaches aimed at integrating higher shares of renewable energy while reducing operational costs and improving service quality.

The MoU also includes efforts to strengthen bulk system resource and load planning through advanced forecasting methods, weather-informed generation planning, and improved integration between planning and procurement processes.

“By combining AIDA’s on-ground engagement with ESIG’s global experience, this partnership aims to strengthen the capability of Indian DISCOMs to navigate the evolving energy landscape and accelerate the transition towards a more resilient, efficient, and future-ready power system,” stated AIDA.
