The Advanced Materials business of Aditya Birla Chemicals (Thailand) Ltd. and Organic Recycling Systems Ltd. (ORSL) have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a sustainable composite recycling value chain.
Composites, which are made of reinforcing fibre and liquid epoxy resin, offer an unmatched balance of lightweight performance, strength and durability, driving their use across sectors including wind energy, transportation, construction, aerospace and industrial manufacturing. However, conventional thermoset composites are inherently challenging to recycle because their permanently crosslinked resin matrix cannot be broken down to recover valuable raw materials, the company stated.
Aditya Birla's Recyclamine epoxy system addresses this challenge as it enables separation of the raw materials during the recycling process and their subsequent recovery for potential reuse.
ORSL will take the lead in integrating and optimising composite recycling processes to effectively target a wide range of waste materials, including conventional epoxy-based materials as well as Aditya Birla's Recyclamine epoxy system, allowing for a closed-loop system.
Rajesh Balakrishnan, Chief Executive Officer, Advanced Materials, Aditya Birla Group, said, “Circularity starts with designing composites for their next life. With Recyclamine and our collaboration with ORSL, we are developing scalable recycling solutions that turn composite waste into valuable resources and help close the loop.”
Dr. Manju Tanwar, Chief Scientist and Head of R&D, ORSL, said, “Closing the loop on composites requires solutions that are both scalable and commercially viable. Together, Recyclamine technology and our waste-repurposing expertise are creating new pathways to recover, reuse and unlock value from composite waste.”
