In a bid to boost Sri Lanka’s renewable energy sector, Adani Green Energy has announced a USD 1 billion investment to develop two major wind power projects in the Mannar and Pooneryn regions.
This move is set to add a combined capacity of 500 MW, with the Mannar project contributing 286 MW and Pooneryn adding 214 MW.
This investment aligns with Adani’s goal of increasing its renewable energy capacity to 45 GW by 2030, while also supporting Sri Lanka’s target to achieve 70 percent renewable energy in its power mix by the same year. The projects are expected to create around 5,000 jobs during the construction phase and provide additional employment opportunities once operational.
By leveraging advanced wind turbine technology, these projects aim to maximize efficiency and energy output, setting new benchmarks for wind energy in the region. The environmental benefits are substantial, with an estimated reduction of 650,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
In May 2024, Adani Green Energy Ltd. and the Sri Lankan government signed a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) to develop two wind power stations in the northern provinces of Mannar and Pooneryn.
