Oman’s Nama Power and Water Procurement Company (Nama PWP) has revealed that prominent global utility developers, including Saudi-based Acwa Power, UAE-based Masdar, and France’s TotalEnergies, have qualified to bid for five major wind energy projects across key regions in the Sultanate.
This development is a significant milestone in Oman’s ongoing efforts to boost its renewable energy capacity and transition towards a low-carbon economy. The projects are part of Oman’s broader goal of generating 30 percent of its energy from renewable sources by 2030, a critical step in reducing the nation’s dependency on fossil fuels and enhancing energy security. Furthermore, these initiatives are aligned with Oman’s ambition to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Collectively, the wind energy projects are expected to reduce Oman’s annual carbon emissions by over 978,000 tonnes, contributing significantly to the country’s renewable energy output.
Nama PWP, Oman’s exclusive power and water procurer, announced that five large-scale Independent Power Projects (IPPs) are set to be developed across several key governorates. These projects will be a major part of Oman’s renewable energy strategy, with commercial operations expected between 2027 and 2028. The projects will provide substantial energy capacity, ranging from 81 MW to 400 MW each, and are located in critical regions including South Sharqiyah, Duqm, and Dhofar.
The tender process for these projects saw strong participation, with a total of 16 Statements of Qualification (SOQs) submitted for the Jaalan Bani Bu Ali Wind IPP alone, and 15 SOQs each for the other four projects. After a thorough evaluation, Nama PWP shortlisted several major international players, including Acwa Power, Masdar, TotalEnergies, Sumitomo, Itochu, and EDF Renouvelables. These developers will now compete for the opportunity to develop Oman’s next wave of wind power infrastructure.
Nama PWP’s commitment to diversifying Oman’s energy mix through competitive tenders for renewable projects, such as these wind and solar initiatives, marks a major step towards securing a sustainable and energy-efficient future.
