The Ashoka Centre for a People-centric Energy Transition (ACPET) and Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd. (Tata Power-DDL) have signed a five-year memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate on research, innovation and capacity building to support India's energy transition.

The partnership combines ACPET's expertise in energy research, policy and data analysis with Tata Power-DDL's operational experience in power distribution. The two organisations will jointly undertake research projects, technology demonstrations, policy engagement and knowledge-sharing initiatives aimed at developing practical solutions for the country's evolving power sector.

The collaboration comes as India's electricity sector undergoes rapid transformation driven by rising renewable energy deployment, increasing power demand, grid modernisation and changing consumer expectations. The partners said the initiative would provide a structured platform to address emerging challenges and opportunities in areas such as smart grids, electric vehicles, distributed energy resources, energy storage, demand-side management and consumer engagement.

Under the agreement, ACPET and Tata Power-DDL will jointly develop research projects, policy briefs and technical reports to generate evidence-based recommendations for industry and policymakers. The collaboration will also include technology demonstrations, expert dialogues, training programmes and knowledge exchange initiatives, while exploring the establishment of a Centre of Excellence focused on innovation in the power sector.

"India's energy transition presents a unique opportunity to bring together research, policy, innovation and real-world implementation," said Dr. Praveer Sinha, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Tata Power. He said stronger collaboration between academia, industry, policymakers and innovators would be essential to developing scalable solutions for the country's evolving energy landscape.

Vaibhav Chowdhary, Director of ACPET, said the partnership would combine operational experience with research expertise to develop an energy system that is "empirically grounded, practically tested, and designed to be sustainable, secure, and equitable for India and the Global South."

Dwijadas Basak, Chief Executive Officer of Tata Power-DDL, said research-driven insights and evidence-based policy support would be critical as the power sector adapts to growing renewable energy integration, distributed energy resources and evolving consumer expectations.

As part of the agreement, Tata Power-DDL will provide infrastructure access and support dedicated research personnel, while both organisations will jointly implement research projects, consumer awareness programmes and dissemination of research findings. A Joint Steering Committee comprising representatives from both institutions will oversee the partnership and guide future activities.

The organisations said the collaboration reflects a shared commitment to addressing the technological, regulatory and societal challenges associated with India's transition to a cleaner and more resilient energy system.
