ABB Partners with Ferrari Hypersail on Renewable-Powered Yacht’s DC Systems
ABB will serve as Ferrari Hypersail project’s Electrification Partner, providing expertise in marine power, DC technology, energy management and energy storage.

ABB has partnered with Ferrari Hypersail to support the development of electrical and energy-management systems for the 100-foot ocean-going, full-foiling monohull yacht, the companies said.
ABB will serve as the project’s Electrification Partner, providing expertise in marine power, direct current (DC) technology, energy management and energy storage.
Ferrari Hypersail is designed to operate entirely on renewable energy and generate, store and manage its own power while sailing for extended periods in offshore conditions. Its electrical architecture will include systems operating at 48 volts and 800 volts DC.
The partnership will focus on integrating DC systems, intelligent power distribution and energy-management technologies to support critical functions including navigation, foil controls, safety systems and propulsion.
ABB said it has more than 25 years of experience in DC technology and holds more than 700 patents in the field. The company said the project will provide an opportunity to test advanced electrification technologies under extreme offshore conditions.
“Ferrari Hypersail gives ABB a unique platform to demonstrate how we are collaborating with partners to push the limits of Direct Current technology,” said Giampiero Frisio, president of ABB’s Electrification business area.
Ferrari Hypersail Project Leader Enrico Voltolini said, “Hypersail runs entirely on renewable energy. It has to be self-sufficient for weeks at a time in the most hostile ocean environments on earth. Having ABB’s electrification expertise connected to the project is a valuable operational advantage.”
The project’s power architecture is intended to function as a self-sufficient microgrid, balancing renewable generation, energy storage and power distribution in real time.
ABB said insights from the project could also contribute to the development of resilient power systems for sectors including shipping, data centres, renewable energy infrastructure and industrial microgrids.
