The 7th Grid-India Day was celebrated today, commemorating seven years of independent functioning of Grid Controller of India Limited as a Central Public Sector Enterprise.
Union Minister for Power and New and Renewable Energy, R.K. Singh, addressed the gathering, emphasizing the need for Grid-India to brace for challenges in the face of a growing economy and disruptive future.
Speaking of the future, the Minister said that bundling of energy will be a key part of the future energy systems. “The future is where thermal power and renewable power or hydro and renewable energy get bundled. Rules and regulations are meant to be changed to meet the future. We are going to transition in an orderly manner. The future is that we are going to become totally green.”
He highlighted the challenges posed by the increasing share of renewable energy and distributed renewable energy, urging Grid-India to prepare for changes such as widespread adoption of rooftop solar, electric cooking, and electric mobility.
Addressing cybersecurity challenges, Singh stressed the importance of adequate preparation, cautioning against potential threats, and emphasizing the need for trusted vendors and secure systems. He underlined the pivotal role of Grid-India in meeting the country's ambitious goals for a green and sustainable future.
The event also saw the launch of the Grid-India Report on Electricity Demand Pattern Analysis, providing insights for strategic planning by power agencies. Singh unveiled the report, which delves into diurnal, seasonal, and annual patterns of electricity demand, aiding in comprehensive understanding and planning.
The Chairman of the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC), Jishnu Barua, highlighted India's position as a global advocate for energy transition. He emphasized the importance of renewable energy sources and effective methodologies for energy conservation in shaping India's energy future.
CMD, GRID-INDIA, S.R. Narasimhan, acknowledged the organization's history and the challenges ahead. He emphasized the name change from POSOCO to Grid Controller of India, reflecting the organization's readiness to take on new responsibilities. The CMD highlighted the importance of anticipating challenges and keeping the grid secure amid rising power demand and new loads.
GRID-INDIA day is observed on 3rd January to commemorate its independent functioning since 3rd January 2017, as a CPSE under the Ministry of Power. GRID-INDIA is entrusted with the crucial responsibility of ensuring the integrated operation of the electricity grid in a reliable, efficient, and secure manner.
