Marking a major milestone in India’s green energy journey, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, virtually inaugurated the country’s first 1 MW Green Hydrogen Plant in the port sector at Deendayal Port, Kandla.

Developed under the Make-in-India initiative, this 1 MW plant is the initial phase of a larger 10 MW green hydrogen facility, the foundation stone for which was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Bhuj on May 26, 2025.

Sonowal hailed the event as a historic milestone in India’s green transition. He emphasised that this development will pave the way for transforming India into a greener maritime hub. He also stated that Deendayal Port is the first among the major ports in India to accomplish this green mission in such a short span of time, setting a benchmark for sustainable port operations across the nation.

Sharing the news on X, Sonowal wrote: “Guided by Hon’ble PM Shri Narendramodi ji’s NetZero2070 vision, Bharat is charting a bold new course in its maritime journey. Proud to virtually inaugurate the 1 MW Green Hydrogen Plant at Deendayal_Port, Kandla, yet another milestone in our pursuit of sustainable innovation. With Green Energy, Green Tugs and a Green Resolve, we are steering India towards a future-ready maritime sector to build an Aatmanirbhar Bharat.”

Implemented by engineering major Larsen and Toubro, the project is expected to generate approximately 140 metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually.

The event also saw the presence of Minister of State Shantanu Thakur, Ports Secretary T.K. Ramachandran, DPA Chairman Sushil Kumar Singh, and senior officials from Deendayal Port Authority and L and T.
