34 energetica INDIA- June_2020 ELECTRIC VEHICLE The government will have to relook at urban regulations to give more space to pedestrians and cyclists. Logically, investments in the shared mobility space will be diverted to ‘individual mi- cro mobility which lends itself to electric mobility in the form of E-bikes. Since there will be significantly lesser people travelling long dis - tances to their offices, the roads will seemingly free up for private cars. But the scare of using public and shared transport will drive this surge in small-sized cars and 2-wheeler purchases. This is where electric mobility may probably play out, across levels - from electric cycles,electric scooters to electric cars. Different governments have reacted differently across countries. Already some nations like UK, Germany and Spain have used the collapse of the oil-based economy to focus on sustainable mobility and their stimulus packages have the transition to electric mobility as a major component. India will be forced to support the ailing conventional automotive industries, so as to not be seen as forcing in another disruption. Nonetheless, India will see a significant focus on clean mobility and an increase in adoption of electric vehicles. And this is al- ready visible in the rising number of discussions; companies like us are having in this space. The clearer skies and the cleaner air in even the worst polluting cities have pushed people to have clean mobility as part of their purchase consideration. So, what does AC 2021 look like for the e-Mobility space in India? - Complex and uncertain, but one which requires going back to the drawing board and thinking of e-Mobility options with a totally new set of lenses. One thing for certain though, while the total sales of Automobiles in India will take years to get back to the past numbers, but the % share of Electric Vehicles is bound to increase significantly.
