SMART CITIES IoT Technologies for Smart Cities Smart Cities are the new Future. The fourth Industrial revolution has ushered in a shift in business paradigm where we see an emphasis on technology to create more livable surroundings for the common man. It is this main driv- ing factor that has enabled a rise in the number of Digital Cities around the world, and it is only set to grow at an accelerated rate in the future. Smart Cities of the future will rely heavily on IoT to function efficiently. In fact, IoT would be the key to building smarter cities. Cities today are not just well laid out concrete structures, they generate a huge amount of data. Timely extraction and efficient usage of this field data will originate as a key function of any technol- ogy enabled smart cities. IoT Technologies inherent strength to extract field data through a Smart Sensor Wireless Networks and communicating it to remote servers in real-time makes it next best technology for smart cities. Furthermore, how local administration will process and utilize this accurate field data for actionable intelligence will increase its adoption. The truth is, IoTis being deployed for lot of varied applications. Some of them areTraf - fic control systems, Intelligent Transport Management, Smart Waste Management systems, Smart Parking, Smart Street Lighting, Environment Monitoring solu - tions, Precision Farming, Drinking water monitoring & distribution, smart grid etc.It is not a concept like Artificial Intelligence, IoT is a Process; a holistic overview of a connection of various networks that help support Smart City initiatives by provid- ing seamless communication between diverse channels. Some of the key applications getting deployed in Indian Smart cities using underline IoT architecture are: Smart Street Lights: Cities have been continuously develop- ing. In less than a decade, technology has revolutionized the Urban landscape. There has been a huge emphasis on smart planning of Urban infrastructure as well as Green Architecture, both forming two necessary elements of a Smart City layout. Street light infrastructure has been in place for decades now. However, cit - ies have started replacing conventional street light network with IoT architecture Smart Street Light network. Cities are wit - nessing improvement in uptimes, reduc - tion in maintenance costs & associated manpower and overall bringing energy efficiency. Environment monitoring solutions: Air Management systems help in cap- turing various air quality parameters in real-time while also aiding in forecast emissions. When the air surroundings are monitored, it helps to create different environmental low-emission zones, as well as measure air pollution. It helps identify occasions to improve the quality of air, water and reduce energy use as well as carbon footprint. Sustainable and cleaner cities improve the quality of lives for citizens and make cities more livable and sustainable. Traffic Control System: Traffic is a huge challenge for modern cities due to the constant growing need of singular use vehicle for citizens. Intel - ligent traffic management systems help in maintaining and monitoring the flow of traffic in real-time. Smart sensors mea - sure the traffic on roads, aides in lesser time-consuming route guidance, adaptive traffic signals which thereby help prevent traffic congestion in Smart Cities. Smart Parking: Smart Parking approach leads to in - valuable citizen convenience in terms of ease of parking by guiding them to nearest available parking bay via usage of city specific smart parking citizen applications. Additionally, Smart parking technologies gives the data and decision making to travel via private car / taxi / pub - lic transports in the hands of citizens. One can check parking availability in advance for a destination, can reserve it online in advance and in absence of parking can prefer to ply via taxi/public transport. Overall, it supports in decongestion of city roads while ensuring that personal motor vehicle users compensate the city for the use of valuable land on which they park their vehicles. Other benefits like Op - timization of Parking inventory and digital payments invariably boosts revenues of smart cities and local administrations which adopts IoT architecture Smart Parking Technology. Smart Waste Management System: Smart Waste Management is one an- other element of Smart Cities that is set to have more applications in the future. Tracking of waste disposal vehicles, real time alarms from smart garbage bins for waste collection upon certain fill threshold etc. are few use cases being evaluated by smart cities for efficient waste man - agement. Smart Cities are the new Future. The fourth Industrial revolution has ushered in a shift in business paradigm where we see an emphasis on technology to create more livable surroundings for the common man. It is this main driving factor that has enabled a rise in the number of Digital Cit - ies around the world, and it is only set to grow at an accelerated rate in the future. 34 energetica INDIA- May_2020 Udaya Bhaskar CEO & MD, iRAM Technologies
