While solar cells produce power, Encapsulants and Backsheets protect the cells from the environment. Many common problems – such as moisture damage, power loss, yellowing, cracking, or safety failures – often begin not with the cell, but with poor-quality protective materials. When people talk about solar panels, they usually focus on big numbers – higher wattage, better efficiency, or the latest cell technology. These are important, but they are only part of the story. What truly decides whether a solar module performs reli- ably for 25 years or fails much earlier is something most people never see. Encapsulants and backsheets are the hidden layers inside every solar module. They do not generate electricity, but they pro- tect, support, and preserve the cells that do. At Knack Energy, we believe these layers are the silent strength behind long-life solar modules – and a key reason why quality matters more than ever. Why These Hidden Layers Matter? A solar module lives its entire life outdoors. Day after day, year after year, it faces heat, rain, humidity, dust, strong sunlight, and electrical stress. In India, these conditions are especially demanding, from hot deserts and humid coastal areas to heavy monsoon regions. While solar cells produce power, Encapsulants and Backsheets protect the cells from the environment. Many common prob- lems – such as moisture damage, power loss, yellowing, crack- ing, or safety failures – often begin not with the cell, but with poor-quality protective materials. That is why at Knack Ener- gy, these materials are never treated as ‘secondary parts’. They are treated as core engineering elements that directly affect performance, safety, and long-term value. Encapsulants: Protecting the Solar Cells from Inside Encapsulants are the transparent layers that hold the solar cells in place between the front glass and the backsheet. Their job is simple but critical: keep the cells safe, stable, and electri- cally insulated for decades. EVA: Trusted and Time-Tested EVA (Ethylene Vinyl Acetate) has been used in solar modules for many years. It allows sunlight to pass through easily and bonds well with glass and cells. When made and processed cor- rectly, EVA can deliver reliable performance. However, in hot and humid conditions, low-quality EVA or poor lamination can allow moisture to enter the module and reduce performance over time. At Knack Energy, only careful- ly selected EVA materials are used, combined with controlled lamination processes to ensure consistent quality. POE: Extra Protection for Harsh Conditions POE (Polyolefin Elastomer) is a more advanced encapsulant. It absorbs much less moisture and offers better electrical protec- tion, which helps prevent power loss caused by voltage stress. This makes POE especially suitable for large solar plants, high-voltage systems, and challenging environments. Knack Energy uses POE where long-term reliability and performance stability are the top priorities. EPE: A Smart Balance EPE is a combination of EVA and POE layers.
