Trina Solar Drives India Solar Market into the Era of 600W+ Output
Technology plays an important role along with a developed policy and institutional framework. The emerging technology trends can help solar generation be more robust.
Due to severe measures to contain the Covid-19 pandemic, a recent report by research firm Wood Mackenzie shows Indian PV installations will sit at just 4.9 GW in 2020, down 42% on 2019 and the lowest level since 2016. According to the Indian Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, the government has set a target of installing 175 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2022, including 100 from solar, and aims for 450 GW by 2030. India has definitely become a major solar market on the world map with huge energy needs.
The solar energy would not just be a sustainable solution, but it would also lower the costs and contribute to cleaner cities. Technology plays an important role along with a developed policy and institutional framework. The emerging technology trends can help solar generation be more robust.
Trina Solar, one of the leading global PV and smart energy total solution provider, has continued to make inroads by introducing new high-efficiency modules and offering smart energy solutions in India.
With excellent products, and services, Trina Solar has achieved rapid growth, and the demand for it has doubled in the overseas market. The company’s third-quarter reports for 2020 revealed that first-half momentum has held up, with revenues and profits both rising steadily. The company’s total realized income increased by 18.66% year on year.

Trina Solar has been in business for more than two decades and further reached a milestone as it has been now listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, which is for innovative technology companies. Bloomberg New Energy Finance has rated Trina Solar as a ‘top performer’ in terms of bankability five times in a row from 2016 to 2020.
“Trina Solar was one of the first movers in the Indian solar energy market, and the company has the highest market share with over 12% in Indian market. Gaurav Mathur, Trina Solar India director says ‘Local knowledge and relationships are as important to the customer, as it is to us. This is how we have become India’s number one supplier of PV modules’.”
New Benchmark in industry: Vertex (600W+) high-power PV modules, recognized by the industry worldwide
Despite the impacts of COVID-19 global pandemic, Trina Solar launched two next generation 600W Vertex modules. The Vertex ultra-high power modules are based on the latest 210/M12 cell technology, combining Trina’s more than 20 years of technological experience and innovation, excellent R&D team and firstclass domestic intelligent manufacturing base.
Mono-facial Vertex module can generate up to 605W power output. The other bifacial Vertex module can produce up to 600W from the front surface and additional power from the backside. Both adopt a low-voltage design, enabling more number of modules to be connected and in turn increase the power of per-string of modules by more than 40% compared to conventional.
The Vertex modules incorporate many innovations like 210mm silicon wafers, high-density encapsulation and multi-busbar technologies while its main benefits include higher power output, lower balance of system cost, greater reliability and suitable for large-scale ground mounted PV power plants and large industrial and commercial rooftop projects. These features could be highly beneficial for the Indian market which has huge solar demands.

Mathur says ‘Indian consumers are always price savvy, but they are also concerned about quality. Owners and financers of solar installations are now looking more to tier-one manufacturers like us, because we have good solutions, reputation, warranties and bankability ratings that promise profitability in solar investments.’
To date, the company has received signed orders for over 2GW of Vertex modules from its major global markets across Europe, Asia-Pacific, Latin America and the Middle East. All domestic orders have come from top-ranking Chinese electric power developers. Committed to pushing future boundaries, Trina Solar expects total production capacity of its ultra-high-power Vertex modules to hit around 22GW by the end of 2020, with a state-of-the-art 210-focused production setup forecast to be in place in 2021.
Trina Solar’s 600W/550W ultra-high power Vertex module series has been approved in full-series reliability tests by TÜV Rheinland, and certified to IEC 61215 and IEC 61730. In a further boost to the market competitiveness of its products, recently Trina Solar was also received the world’s first IEC 62941:2019 photovoltaic module manufacturing quality system certification from TÜV Rheinland.
Leading tracker technology to create greater value for the Indian market
India is a market that has traditionally used fixed-tilt, but the growing popularity of bifacial modules, with increasingly higher power output, will help drive demand for trackers. The benefit of using trackers is that they substantially increases the amount of electricity the solar farm produces by having the panels track the movement of the sun throughout the entirety of the day, as well as benefitting from the additional synergy of boosting output from bifacial modules as could be expected with fixed tilt solutions, with the overall effect of significantly enhancing LCOE and financial returns despite a modest premium on upfront capex and land costs.
In GTM Research’s “Global PV Tracker Landscape Report 2020”, Nclave is listed as the joint 5th tracker of 2020 by volume shipped. In September this year, Trina Solar became the first Chinese PV company to acquire an overseas tracker mount business when it bought up the remaining equity in Nclave, ensuring unrivalled bankability standing behind the solution for its entire operating life.
Nclave’s technology accumulation in the field of smart trackers combined with Trina Solar’s State Key Laboratory’s leading technology research and development in the field of photovoltaics will further enhance the efficiency of Trina Solar’s tracker products. The company demonstrates its ability to lead the market in innovation, and a firm commitment in providing unique holistic solutions to the market.
With the ongoing growth of the tracker mount market and its own growing penetration rate, Trina Solar will continue to seek coordinated and optimized integration of its high-power modules and PV tracker mounts in order to create greater value for customers.
TrinaPro Mega: All-in-one integrated solar solution
Mathur says, “ Bi-facial panels equipped with trackers can conservatively generate 10-20% more energy or even more in optimal locations with high ground reflectance.”
Trina Solar utilizes an innovative turn-key approach to utility-scale and commercial solar PV installations by bundling together three core components: modules, trackers and high-quality central or string inverters comprising a fully integrated solution, TrinaPro Mega. It incorporates latest Vertex modules, up to 120 modules per tracker, enabling EPC’s to attain 8-15% lower BOS cost and unlock a 3-8% increase in power generation as compared to its first version, delivering the highest, most assured long term energy outcome for IPP’s and long term owners alike.
TrinaPro Mega is ideal for utility-scale projects in India or commercial and industrial projects of 10MW or more, covering different terrain, different slopes, different wind speeds and other complex application scenarios. It delivers low balance of system (BOS) costs and increase in power generation.
