India's growth story is being shaped by energy-intensive sectors—industries, data centres, commercial spaces, manufacturing facilities, and urban infrastructure, all scaling up rapidly. This expansion, in turn, is driving the demand for a reliable and resilient power supply.
Power is the fundamental need of a modern economy. But meeting this need is about far more than generating additional power or building new energy infrastructure. An often-overlooked aspect of energy security is ensuring that existing power infrastructure remains reliable, efficient and resilient. The rising pace of economic activity across the country calls for continuous maintenance and modernisation of energy infrastructure to keep businesses and essential services running smoothly.
Reliability over Capacity
Manufacturing is becoming increasingly automated. Data centres depend on continuous power to keep servers and cooling systems operational. Healthcare relies on uninterrupted power for critical medical equipment, while commercial buildings need it to keep their facilities and operations running. As these sectors grow, the cost of power interruptions grows with them—no longer a mere inconvenience, but a productivity and economic concern.
To support this transformation, the country is producing more electricity from both renewable and non-renewable sources. India's total electricity generation touched 1,829.69 BU in 2024–25, and the generation target for 2025–26 has been set at 2,000.4 BU—underlining the rapid pace at which capacity is being added. The country is well on track to expand this capacity further in the years ahead; that is not a cause for concern. What requires greater attention is distribution and maintenance.
Even today, resilience tends to be treated as an afterthought. A more pragmatic approach is to build it into infrastructure planning from the outset, through three key levers: reliable power supply, efficient electrical infrastructure, and dependable backup power.
With more than 508,535 ckm of transmission lines and close to 1,469,041 MVA of transformation capacity, the scale of India's network is substantial. However, surging electricity demand, rapid capacity addition, and the geographic mismatch between generation and consumption are all adding pressure on the grid. The rising share of renewable energy in the mix will further necessitate structural upgrades. Ensuring energy security, therefore, will require sustained investment in high-capacity transmission corridors and stronger grid interlinkages.

Even the most robust capacity and transmission links cannot eliminate every risk of disruption. This is where dependable backup power becomes critical to safeguarding energy security.
