Energetica India was at Taipei during 31st July To 3rd August 2018 in Taiwan to visit the factories of some of the important participants at Renewable energy expo 2018 this year which is held from 18th to 20th September 2018 at Greater Noida in India.

The visit was taken care of by Taiwan's foremost non-profit trade promoting organization. Sponsored by the government and industry organizations, TAITRA assists enterprises to expand their global reach. Headquartered in Taipei, TAITRA has a team of 1,300 specialists and operates 5 local offices in Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Taichung, Tainan and Kaohsiung as well as 61 branches worldwide. Together with Taipei World Trade Center (TWTC) and Taiwan Trade Center (TTC), TAITRA has formed a global network dedicated to promoting world trade.

Day 1 : 31st August 2018

Green Trade Promotion Program Invites Overseas Media for an Interview

TAITRA’s President & CEO Walter Yeh, Energetica India’s interaction to understand on how the Taiwanese government continue to promote Green energy and what are the future opportunities in some other Asian countries.

Q1: How does the Taiwanese government promote Green Energy and Circular Economy in the “5+2 Industrial Innovation Plan”?

A1: "5+2" is an innovative plan to transform Taiwan’s manufacturing towards high value-added serve and solutions to spur domestic economic growth and industrial development. Among them, green energy technology and circular economy belong to the category under Green Industry. This reflects the importance of green industry in the role of domestic economic and industrial development. We must drive growth through supporting Taiwan green industries to expand its exports.

The "Green Trade Promotion Program" is the main strategy used by the Government to strengthen international marketing of our green industry. Green Trade Project Office is the office in charge of implementation, and through the use of Big Data analysis selected5 main categories: "1. Renewable Energy & Energy Storage, 2. Energy Saving, 3. Recycling of Resources, 4. Environmental Protection Equipment, & 5. Low Carbon Transportation. South bound countries, the U.S. and Germany, and other high-potential markets are the target markets.

The implementation strategies include:

(1) Serving as Think Tank & Raising Public Awareness through Market Insights and Digital Marketing.

(2) Building up Marketing Capacities through providing Certification Acquisition Consulting Service, Marketing Strategy Reviews, and Business Matchmaking Meetings.

(3) Strengthening Global Marketing and Image Promotion Campaigns such as Exhibition Marketing, Trade Missions, Overseas “Green Desk” Service, International Media Campaigns, Business Networking, & Business Ecosystem.

Q2: What are the advantages of Taiwan's Green Energy Industry?

A2: We are in a time of global energy transition, and green energy is the new engine driving economic development. Taiwan’s solar cell industry inside the solar energy industry accounts for about 10% of the global solar cell production, second only to mainland China. Motech, Gintech, &Neo Solar Power are among the top 10 solar cell manufacturers in the world. Upstream materials such as wafers, Taiwan has top brands such as Sino American Silicon Products. In order to support the green energy industry, our government assists through industrial transformation. Many companies have upgraded their business model of solar panels from quantity to more value-added whole-plant solutions, incorporating development of related products such as portable storage and charging equipment. Through innovations and technological breakthroughs, Taiwan manufacturers capture major overseas markets.

Taiwan's western coast has the reputation of being one of the best wind farm locations in the world. The development of offshore wind farms has become the focus of attention, and it has attracted many foreign investors to Taiwan for investing and finds cooperation opportunities. Taiwan’s small wind turbine below 1kW and components has complete industrial chain. Wind turbines below 10kW are 100% self-manufactured.

In the energy storage industry, Taiwanese companies have communication technology, electromechanical integration capabilities and power engineering technology. However, for most of the battery systems, there is cooperation with foreign manufacturers and outsourcing. In addition, there are hydrogen energy and fuel cell parts. There are more than 35 manufacturers in the high, middle, and low streaming Taiwan's hydrogen energy and fuel cell industrial chain with R&D of more than 10 years. In recent years, the industry has made significant developments.

Energy-saving lighting, such as smart lighting and LED lighting still have wide-ranging business opportunities. Taiwan manufacturers are able to customize and are flexible with the needs of clients in addition to having a complete supply chain. Furthermore, Taiwan's excellent semiconductor and ICT technology support the development of future high-end products and provide solutions.


Q3: What are the opportunities for cooperation between Taiwan's green energy industry and India/Australia/Turkey in the future?

A3: The characteristic of Taiwanese manufacturers is to constantly pursue the development of better-performing products. They are focused on solving the needs of their customers. For instance, they are very good at customizing the products according to the needs of the customer. The Indian solar roof development has attracted much attention. The solar roofs need solar panels with good power generation, which could find more future cooperation. Australia's sparsely populated terrain makes excess electricity hard or unable to be exported to places far away. If large-scale power plants continue to develop in the future, grid infrastructure will be most critical, but grid construction costs are high and time-consuming. The Australian government is investing heavily in energy storage systems. Taiwanese engineering companies can help to improve the power supply and become a supplier to Australia.

According to trade statistics, the amount of solar cells exported to Turkey last year increased by 256.92% compared with 2016. The domestic demand has strong growth momentum. In the case of insufficient solar cell industry, it could cooperate with Taiwan’s solar cell factories.

Q4: What will be the content of the next activity in India/Australia/Turkey?

A4: We will plan our sales promotion activities according to local government policies, market developments, and the advantages of our green industry. We will organize manufacturers that intend to expand into our target markets.

First, from September 18th (Tuesday) to September 20th (Thursday), at the Greater Noida, India, we will participate in the Renewable Energy India Expo 2018. Indian Prime Minister Moody actively promotes solar photovoltaics, according to the Nehru National Solar Project (JNNSM) 2022 solar target is raised to 100GW, and the proportion of roof type is increased. Taiwanese manufacturers such as Hengs Technology, Atecom Technology, SolarTech, Voltronic Power and Gintech are optimistic about the development potential of the Indian market and will be participating in the exhibition. We will then travel to Australia to participate in the 2018 Australian International Energy Exhibition (ALL-ENERGY 2018) in early October and exhibit at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre from October 3rd to 4th. The Australian International Energy Show is the largest renewable energy exhibition in Australia. By 2020, Australia government’s goal is to reach 20% of the total electricity supply from renewable energy and promote further green energy development.

Turkey's energy policy strives to achieve the national goal of 30% renewable energy generation in 2023. For the solar photovoltaic industry, the export value to Turkey in the first four months of this year was 108.55% higher than that of the same period of last year. Turkey’s Electricity Market Law encourages more renewable energy, thus pushing for further growth momentum. In mid-October this year, we will handle the forums in Istanbul and Ankara respectively. At the same time, we will also organize a delegation of green manufacturers to Turkey. The preparation of the event will increase the opportunities for cooperation in the future.


Q5: The Ministry of Economic Affairs promoted the establishment of the Green Trade Project Office. What are its functions and what services does it provide?

A5: The “Green Trade Promotion Program” for this year led by TAITRA, which is responsible for the operation of the Green Trade Project Office and its implementation of the Green Trade Promotion Program. The project office is focused on three key strategies “Serving as Think Tank &Raising Public Awareness”, “Building up Marketing Capacities” and “Strengthening Global Marketing and Image Promotion Campaigns”, with 12 specific practices including: Market Insight, Counselling, Digital Marketing, Exhibition Marketing, Theme Marketing, Forums, Media Invitations, International Publicity among others. It is our hope to promote green industry to become a new driving force for Taiwan's export growth.

We strongly hope that through TAITRA’s rich experience of over 40 years in international marketing, combined with Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute’s(ITRI) counselling and Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research’s (CIER) green think tank, and international exchange in line with our 5+2, we will create strong growth.

In terms of market development, we set up a “green window” for five new southbound countries including Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and India to collect and provide first-hand business of the country's green industry. In the Green Customer Exploration, Taiwanese manufacturers can commission a three-month customized service. The local green window provides information and help with customer development, market and government procurement opportunities, channel and agent inquiries, and technical cooperation. In the five new south-bound countries, exhibitions will be held with different theme pavilion to showcase Taiwan's green industry.

In the area of counselling, assistance with the implementation of the work, divided mainly into two major categories, "Collecting and analyzing international green environmental certifications" and "Corporate case marketing counselling and international certification". The AR (Augmented Reality) marketing method can be used to catalogue products from manufacturer's products which are too big to ship, providing a 3D model for the customers through a mobile app.

We hope that through these activities we will help Taiwan’s green industries in cultivating its strength, to connect with the international market for many more opportunities, and to enhance the overall green industry image of Taiwan.

1.            In June 2018 China government went for policy change and rolled back the subsidies for solar developers, in this scenario would you be looking for overseas market and how good a prospect would you consider Indian market to be at this juncture?

          As China market has been the global biggest market for years, Gintech has run this market for quite a long time; however, as China also expand their domestic supply chain dramatically in recent years, Gintech has been devoted the global market diversification years ago. Now Gintech is much on a healthy position for facing the policy change happened this June.

          Also thanks to the earlier market diversification strategy that Gintech has made, now as facing such sudden policy change in China, we don't even need to "consider", we are so prepared for India market; seamlessly and mutually become the best and quality solution of PV product supply to our Indian customers.

2.            Compared to India in terms of the current solar panel prices, do you see other Asian countries a good prospect for exporting your products?

          Yes, but not just from the prospective of panel prices, there are also the other Asian countries we can export our products. As a lot of Asian countries like India, they are in lack of electricity; which means they have true demand for energy. Furthermore, some of them may be limited for traditional power generation development, as the grid infrastructure difficulties to overcome the natural geographical conditions, like Indonesia and the Philippines, the high grid cost for cross-island connection; and some countries are at low grid coverage rate, so that the solar power can easily become regional or home-use friendly solution.  

3.            India being the prospective market for the international solar manufactures to service providers, what are your thoughts on opening up to the Indian market?

         As Gintech will become URE (United Renewable Energy), which will have 5 business units, including wafers, cells, modules, solar systems, and energy storage, URE is also ready for the next step for being a total solution provider. India will be one of the market that we'll devoted to extend our product and service to the downstream. Like the question said, India solar players have been multitasking themselves in the international market, Gintech/URE's present supplied products will still be their strength and in the future, we'll open up our collaboration scope, and become their partners, not competitors.

4.            This time Taiwanese companies have shown interest to participate in one of the important exhibitions in India on renewable energy, also the support from the Taiwan government is tremendous. What are your expectations from your presence at Renewable Energy Expo India happening this year?

        Actually, not just this time, for years Gintech and URE partners always value REI as a great and symbolic international solar event held in India, visited and participated the exhibition for years. We have been developing India market since our establishment. A lot of solar module manufacturers certified their first modules and collaborate with Gintech till now. We are so glad to see and be part of India market's growth in the recent years.

       With Taiwan government's support this year, besides to bridge up for the coming URE total solution partnership, we also would like to level up the collaboration not just company to company, (country to country), but culture to culture, that how the long-lasting relationship really builds up.


•             Please tell us about the Phoenix Series of cells that Gintech has come up with and are its unique features better compared to the competitors?

Phoenix Series are colourful cells that Gintech has developed and launched years ago, but to fulfill some niche market requirements like BIPV or to fulfil some special design which the appearance is more important than the cell technical performance. We are not surprised that this series draw your attention, every year, just months before India Deewali holidays, some Indian customers will come and ask for color cells supply, that we know that's how India PV industry would like to celebrate the Deewali.

•             Gintech has a wide range of modules, please tell us about the R&D that went into this product and to which countries is this being exported to?

Back to 4 years ago, Gintech was at the leading position to bring PERC mono cell into mass production, make the most high cost-performance-ratio cell product out of the lab and to the market. After that, both multi and mono series got another product category, PERC mono and PERC multi. The motivation for the PERC technology came from US and Europe as more application for roof-top market, requiring more power in the limited space or high land cost area.

That PERC module application is to improve the BOS cost in those target projects. Though the PERC mono nowadays is more available, but Gintech and URE partners can still be confident to say that we are still supplying the best quality PERC products among the global supply chain.

          After the cell technology improvement, which can push up the module power most directly, meanwhile Gintech/URE are also developing new module technology, like half-cut, LRF application, strengthen the module products and our capability to fulfil various market requirements.      

•             Since you export of your products across the globe, do you see a change in the demand for the Gintech Products in the India market recently and what do you think of the future prospects for next couple of years.

           Some changes are happening to India market also. India also expand their module manufacturing capacity and capability, and roof-top application is also the direction of the market, India module manufacturers start to certify Gintech high efficiency mono and multi cells to get their own product line ready also, that India market could direct to more cost-quality balanced product demand.

Day 3: 2nd September 2018

At 9:30   LEATEC FINE CERAMICS CO., LTD. Energetica India interacts with LEATEC FINE CERAMICS to learn their perspective on the changing market and learn their future plans.

General questions based on the changes in the Chinese solar market policies and India as a prospective market.

1) In June 2018 china government went for policy change and rolled back the subsidies for solar developers, in this scenario would you be looking for overseas market and how good a prospect would you consider Indian Market to be at this juncture?

Ans. Leatec has been diversifying our market in the past years. Our main customers are in Europe, Australia, Japan Taiwan and India. China’s new policy is impacting Chinese local manufacturers, and of course to other countries as well.

India is our target market since before, and it will become more important one after China new policy. We have been doing business with India customers in the past 5 years. The price request is very tough generally. While there are still some requesting good quality products from Taiwan.

2) Compared to India in terms of the current solar panel prices, do you see other Asian countries a good prospect for exporting your products?

Ans. India market is still one of the best market in Asia now. Turkey , Vietnam and Malaysia, Philippine are also on our list of potential markets.


3) India being the prospective market for the international solar manufacturers to service

providers, what are your thoughts on opening up to the Indian market?

Ans. India is going to execute 25% import tax, which has already impact the PV components suppliers like Leatec. With our technology and quality, we are considering to find a partner in India for building an assembly line in India. This can strengthen our partner’s sales competitiveness and increase the sales in India.

4) This time too theTaiwanese companies have shown interest to participate in one of the important

exhibitions in India on renewable energy, also the support from the Taiwan government is

tremendous. What is your expectations from your presence at Renewable energy Expo India

happening this year?

Ans. Leatec/COYO has been working on India market for years. We’d like to get a good agency and partner for rebuilding our reputation and market share.



• Tell us how Leatec has been establishing itself with the renewable energy Industry and how has the Ceramics been a part of this journey, how can they be an advantage in making of the Solar panel?

• Help us understand the Green product range that Leatec has ventured into and do you have the Research centre in Taiwan, tell us about the latest project you are working on.

• Are you considering venturing into the Indian market with an approach of this innovative product in solar and what is the sector you would plan to look at?

Ans. As top three ceramic substrate player in the world, Leatec build a very strong human resources and organization. 10 years ago, Leatec planned to get involved in green energy products, including PV junction boxes, PV connectors, PV cables and ceramics for green energy.

Leatec has its own R&D center in Taiwan and been developing COYO products with TUV and UL certifies for years. Recent new products are

  •                 1,500V connector(TUV certified)
  •                 BIPV junction box(under TUV testing)

1,000V and 1,500V products are all very high demanded in India. We are intending to find a partner willing to build the assembly line for above products and cooperate to work on India market.

Day 4: 3rd September 2018


Energetica – India interacts with BIG SUN ENERGY TECHNOLOGY INC. to know more on their expansion plans and learn more on their core products.

  1. We would like to know how is Big Sun plans to contribute towards the providing clean and affordable green energy , are there specific projects lined up to make this happen?

A: BIG SUN started out with solar cell manufacturing, but China’s governmental subsidy and trade wars among countries has turned this solar cells sector into a nightmare. BIG SUN’s current contribution focus on green energy is

1) on iPV Tracker: Dual axis tracker has 30%~40% more (location dependent) power generation than fixed tilt system. The deployment of more iPV Tracker can save tremendous amount of lands required by less efficient fixed tilt system.

2) on promotion of “one terrain with multiple yields” using highly raised iPV Tracker and bi-facial modules, this win-win approach with farmers/fishermen/parking lot owners can relieve the ongoing protest/blockade by land owners while enriching the land owners; moreover, this approach saves much more further lands used exclusively for solar energy production.

3) For regions without typhoon and tropical cyclone, BIG SUN is trying out a light weight version for cost down purpose.

 4) In parallel, BIG SUN is acting as an EPC and component supplier teaming up with

 5)In distant future, BIG SUN shall migrate into the storage business. BIG SUN has already thermal energy storage patents granted in Taiwan and Japan, which we shall work on its commercialization next so as to accompany the further growth of solar energy, not only as an intermittent power supply source, but also as an alternative power source for basic load of power Grid.

  1. Please tell us about the Japan Shiga-ken Power Plant project that your team completed and what was is the uniqueness of this project?

A: This project item was installed on the hills. The most critical concern was the shading resulted from neighbouring trackers staged on upper staircase platform along the hills. This concern was circumvented by BIG SUN patented anti-shading (back tracking) program, for each tracker can be individually pre-programmed to tilt a bit more horizontally to avoid such shading in the hours of such shading would happen.  

  1. What was the R&D involved in making the solar PV tracker a success for the hard and climatic conditions and particularly the dual-axis system which is the latest success?

A: R&D developed iPV Tracker based on Taiwan’s frequent typhoon environment, its design is   wind resistant, flood avoidance, snow resistant, dust removal and shading avoidance. The key success factor in design are, notably, 1) the unique long torque steel cable driving mechanism in coupling with spring as cushion against the strong wind, and the nine anchoring design including the pole itself, 4 corner steel cables and 4 auxiliary steel cables which can resist the strong uplifting wind. 2) Self rotating program having the module platform rotating at an inclined angle to slide off the accumulated snow. This is effective to prevent damage on frames resulted from heavy snow accumulation, as effectively proven in Japan installed sites. 3)the special pair of cross axis enabling 360 degree rotation harvesting more sunshine, consequently more power generation than other linear actuator and slewing drive mechanisms employed by traditional dual axis trackers. 4) Shading avoidance program can enable denser tracker density to maximize overall power generation in a unit area of land. 5) The successful Agro Solar implementation has won confidence in “one Terrain with multiple yields”; such application is getting more attention and also migrating to Aqua Solar application now. 

  1. Tell us about the MW-grade power storage system which you plan to introduce.

A: A patented design in Taiwan and Japan making use of spraying water vaporization potential to drive typical turbine generator. This vaporization energy is provided through heat transferred from a high heat capacity material. The original heat source can be thermal energy generated from solar. Such solar powered thermal storage system can help solar to continue to provide electricity after sunset, through gradual release of thermal power accumulated/elevated in the day time. This is a longer term project which will not be released in the near future.  

  1. What are your prospects for overseas market in the next year and would that include Indian market on your list taking into consideration the market size for solar tracking.

A: BIG SUN is actively working on 1) Licensing to Global partners to manufacture iPV Tracker steel frames with co-branding promotion, we have qualified and qualifying more partners besides Taiwan and China, such as Turkey (Solarguc Enerji and Solid Electron), India (Mungi Group) as our promotion distributor and licensed manufacturing partners to save the shipping cost of heavy tracker frames, and2) already sent demo iPV Tracker samples to a number overseas customer and countries, for example, Soft Bank and Panasonic for their evaluation in India. Our typhoon resistant robust design, high availability (> 99.9%) and high efficiency in power generation is expected to receive more overseas attention in 2018/2019 once potential Customers have completed their sample evaluation and validated on site of the merits of iPV Tracker.
