India Will Reach 227 GW of RE Capacity by 2022: Vice President

The Vice-President called upon town planners to make sustainable solutions such as harvesting solar energy and enhancing green cover an important part of town planning.

India has set a striving target of installing 175 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2022 which is now additionally elevated to 227 GW bearing in mind that the country is well on its way to surpassing the formerly set target, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu believed.

Addressing the fourth Resilient Cities Asia-Pacific (RCAP) Congress 2019, he called upon town planners to make sustainable solutions such as harvesting solar energy and enhancing green cover an important part of town planning.

Naidu supposed economic growth must take environmental protection into consideration and dependence on fossil fuel must be reduced while exploring new forms of energy sources such as solar. “It cannot be business as usual as far as development is concerned,” he further.

The Vice President called upon the senates of provinces and cities of several countries present to adopt innovative approaches to ensure low emission-oriented development, adding that cities are battling the consequences of climate change on a daily basis.

 “India, I must proudly say, is now one of the global leaders in addressing this challenge head-on. As recently announced at the 24th Conference of Parties on Climate Change, in Katowice, Poland, our country is well on its way to achieve our stated Nationally Determined Contributions,” Naidu said.

He also thought that according to a fresh report, executing a circular economy globally makes the Paris Agreement target achievable and the world requires circular economy strategies like increasing the share of renewables in the countries’ energy mix and improving energy efficiency measures.
