Global Wind Day is celebrated on the 15th June all over the world. In India, the awareness drive was led by the Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association (IWTMA) to throw light on the importance of wind energy, especially when we are facing huge energy deficit across the country.
Fast growing economies like India need steady, reliable and cost effective ways and means of energy source to maintain a over 8% GDP growth rate and time and again Wind energy has proved the potential; it is apt to mention here that Tamil Nadu was able to bridge the power deficit gap by over 3500 MW on a daily basis with steady Wind energy support.
While India ranks fifth in the World in terms of installed wind capacity, most of which has come up with private players investing in the category, we have barely touched the tip of the potential with much of the potential yet to be tapped into.
And on the eve of this year’s ‘GLOBAL WIND DAY’ celebrations, Mr. Ramesh Kymal, the Chairman of IWTMA said, “Last fiscal year (2011-2012), wind energy developers worldwide installed a record of 3 GW which added to the total installed capacity of 16.5 GW and in India this clean, green and renewable source of energy needs all round support from policy makers, investors, power utility players and power infrastructure builders to adapt and accelerate the capacity additions so that we can realize the true potential that wind energy represents in the country”.
Mr. D.V Giri, Secretary General of IWTMA added, “Wind energy is the need of the hour. As we all know, it is the best suited alternate source of endless power generation. Creating and celebrating a dedicated day as ‘Global Wind Day’ helps us take the message across to the masses and hope this will hasten the pace of adopting wind energy as a stable future source of powering our lives.”
Annual statistics recently released by the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) shows massive growth in cumulative wind power capacity in Asia, to 82,398 MW in 2011 from 61,106 MW at the end of 2010. The continent will continue to be the world’s largest market with far more new installations than any other region, installing 1,18,000 MW between now and 2016, and surpassing Europe as the world leader in cumulative installed capacity sometime during 2013, ending the period with about 2,00,000 MW in total.
Global Wind Day:
Global Wind Day is a worldwide event that occurs annually on 15 June. It is a day for discovering wind, its power and the possibilities it holds to change our world. It is also a day for discovery of the work that has already begun by pioneers around the world. In more than 75 countries around the globe, wind farms are in operation, generating energy from a clean and renewable source.
Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association (IWTMA) started with a vision to promote and harness wind energy for sustained growth. This green revolution (clean energy) will encompass the economy, business, rural employment and contribute toward self-reliance to meet the growing need of power. IWTMA strives towards high efficiency with the best technology and cost efficiency through volume.
