The turn to renewable energies offers huge opportunities for added value and growing employment on a local level. Together with its sur-rounding rural districts, Freiburg plans to become a 100% region by 2050 and cut CO2 emissions by 50 percent by 2030. This will be specif-ically achieved through targeted investment involving as many stake-holders as possible. A current feasibility study documents the fact that the path to "100% energy from renewables" can even contribute to re-gional value creation: some € 3 billion in investment is needed for re-newable energies and some € 12 billion for building renovation in the Freiburg region. Regional businesses, trades and employees will benefit greatly from this. The associated ecological target thus serves as an economic stimulus program – a win-win situation for both ecology and the economy.
Freiburg represents the successful integration of former opposites – ecology and economy. Environmentally sound policies, solar energy technologies, sustainability and environmental protection have become driving forces behind economic, political and urban development in Frei-burg.
Bernd Dallmann, Chairman Green City Cluster: “Apart from science and technology, politics and active citizens, the city’s climate, as well as its lifestyle and quality of life, round off the image of Freiburg as a ‘Green City’ and attract creative minds, investors and tourists from all around the world.”
Climate protection and energy efficiency within Freiburg's biggest industrial area – Green Industry Park
The shift towards renewable energy is economically advantageous for companies. An important driver of change is the networking of all major actors and components necessary in order to provide the basis for an intelligent control of energy generation, storage and use.
Against this background, the city of Freiburg, badenova (local energy supplier), Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE) and FWTM have developed a new approach in the context of the "Green City Freiburg" concept. Launched in February 2014, the initiative "Green Industry Park Freiburg" should jointly with local companies, develop Freiburg’s largest and oldest industrial area into a future-oriented, sus-tainable energy- and resource-efficient industrial area. This involves net- working between the companies, identifying individual operational solu-tions, joint development of new and innovative projects and pilot projects as well as identifying and exploiting opportunities for cooperation.
The City of Freiburg is internationally known for its environmental ap-proach and its extensive use of solar energy and other renewable sources. It can share experiences gained over many years and show-case a multitude of effective technical and organisational solutions re-lated to sustainable energy management. Focussing early on environ-mental sustainability and photovoltaic has given the city decisive ad-vantages in a competitive international environment. Freiburg's solar businesses and research institutes profit from a close-knit network, and the city's renown and contacts. Hosting a number of prestigious events throughout the year, Freiburg has become a lively centre of the solar industry, and a think tank for sustainability.
