The city of Hyderabad will soon be home to the world's largest LED street lighting project. Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), under the Ministry of Power, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to retrofit whopping 4.5 lakh street lights with enhanced brightness under the Government of India's Street Lighting National Project (SLNP).
With this replacement drive, GHMC will surpass South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), where EESL has retrofitted approximately 2.7 lakh street lights.
The cost of the entire GHMC street lighting project, estimated at approx. ₹270 crores, will be borne by EESL with no upfront cost to GHMC. The municipal Corporation will pay back EESL for the project cost through deemed savings mode, over a period of 7 years. Through the replacement, GHMC aims to save approximately 20 crore kWh electricity annually, resulting to a reduction of over 1.60 Lac tonnes of CO2 annually.
Speaking on the occasion, Shri Saurabh Kumar, Managing Director, EESL said, "It is a moment of immense pride for EESL, to collaborate with Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation to retrofit the city's 4.5 lakh conventional street lights with LED-based lights. We express our gratitude to the Government of Telangana State for giving us the opportunity to helm the world's largest Street Lighting Project. With large ULBs such as GHMC and SDMC fully adopting to energy efficient street lighting, India is well ahead on its way to become a world leader in energy efficiency."
Presently, GHMC has 3.5 lakh street lighting poles, which shall be expanded to over 4.5 lakh by installation of 33 poles per kilometer. GHMC incurs an annual expenditure of ₹210 crores on maintenance and management of the existing conventional street light infrastructure. Through the retrofitting drive, EESL has assured GHMC of approximately 50% savings in electricity. This shall result in a monetary savings of over ₹1,200 crores to GHMC over the 7-year period.
In India, street lighting sector offers a significant potential of energy efficiency and cost savings. As per the 18th Electric Power Survey of CEA, the estimated energy consumption in Indian public lighting sector was 8478 million kWh in 2012-13 and is constantly growing at a CAGR of 7 percent.
Keeping in mind this growth rate, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi launched 100 cities National Programme on January 5, 2015 to convert 1.34 crore conventional street and domestic lights with energy efficient LED lights, under the Street Lighting National Programme (SLNP). Nationally, over 26 lakh conventional street lights have been replaced by LED street lights in 22 states of India.
