The Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Dr. Farooq Abdulla, informed the Rajya Sabha that in view of increased volume of wind installations in recent years, evacuation and transmission infrastructure requires strengthening at some places.
Providing power evacuation and transmission facilities to power projects including wind is primarily the responsibility of respective state governments.
The government has commissioned a study on “Green Energy Corridors” to identify evacuation and transmission infrastructural requirement for renewable energy, including wind energy in future.
The Government is promoting wind power through private sector investment by providing fiscal and promotional incentives such concessional import duty on certain components of wind electric generators, excise duty exemption to manufacturers. 10 years tax holiday on income generated from wind power projects is also available. Loans for installing windmills are available from Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA) and other Financial Institutions. Technical support including wind resource assessment is provided by the Centre for Wind Energy Technology (C-WET), Chennai. Besides, preferential tariff is being provided in potential states. Government had announced a Generation Based Incentive (GBI)during 11th Plan period. Efforts are being made to continue the GBI scheme in 12th Plan.
