Andhra Pradesh plans solar-powered DTH service using Solar

Jump to the comments
According to reports, the Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA), Bhadrachalam, has embarked on an ambitious plan to provide solar-powered Direct-to-Home (DTH) television services to a total of 20 remote tribal habitations in the tribal sub-plan mandals of the district.

The plan is part of an information and communication technology driven initiative to harness solar power, an inextinguishable source of energy, and reach out to the tribals of the primitive tribal groups (PTGs) living in inaccessible areas particularly on the hill-top habitations in the agency, sources said.

It forms an integral part of a multi-focal developmental strategy being implemented in remote tribal pockets under the Central government sponsored Integrated Action Plan for areas affected by left wing extremism. The ITDA has earlier distributed solar power lanterns and installed television sets with DTH facility in a few hill top habitations a couple of years ago under various other government schemes. However, most of the equipment has become defunct for want of repairs, sources added.

Meanwhile, the ITDA has called for tenders to procure a total of 29 LED TVs with DTH facility, solar panels and other paraphernalia for installation in as many as 20 remote tribal habitations. This apart, tenders were also invited for purchase of a total of 43 LED TVs for provision of DTH satellite television services using the conventional power in a total of 30 electrified tribal habitations. The project has been taken up at a total estimated cost of Rs 24.55 lakh.

The move has been initiated to strengthen the information and communication technology infrastructure and provide television services through the DTH technology to the primitive tribal people in the remote tribal habitations, said Collector Siddharth Jain. It would help in empowering the tribal people with requisite knowledge about various developmental activities as well as issues concerning education, health and other core sectors, he said adding that the new DTH services would be launched by the end of February.
